What To Expect On Your Initial Visit For a Pigmentation Consultation

All skin treatments require initial consultation to assess suitability. During your first consultation, your pigmentation problem will be assessed by our dermatologist. Remember to bring a list of medications or supplements that you are currently taking and skin care products.

Meeting with the Dermatologist

Your visit with the dermatologist should be a pleasant one. Your dermatologist needs to know more about you, your family and your lifestyle in order to provide you with the best medical care. A good dermatologist will take time to listen and to explain various treatment options.

FAQ

There are many types of pigmentory disorders and an equally wide range of treatment options. Optimum results depend on selecting the most appropriate treatment for the particular condition. As such, an accurate diagnosis is essential in the successful treatment of disorders of pigmentation. This is where dermatologists, having undergone years of study of the skin, hair and nails have an advantage.

The commonly encountered hyperpigmentory ( increased pigmentation) disorders in a dermatologist clinic include Malesma, Lentigo and Freckles, Hori’s nevus and Postinflammatory Hyperpigmentation.

Melasma is characterized by tan or brown patches on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin. Risk factors include a genetic tendency, increasing age, hormonal changes and sun exposure. It has been nicknamed the mask of pregnancy as pregnant women or those who are on birth control pills are more susceptible. Although more common in women, men can also develop melasma.

Freckles present as tiny, light to dark brown spots on the face. Fair skinned individuals who have significant sun exposure are more likely to develop freckles. Lentigos are larger, more distinct flat, dark spots which develop on the sun exposed areas of older individuals after many years of excessive sun exposure. It is not always possible to tell the difference between the two lesions on naked eye examination. However on microscopic examination , lentigos present with an increase in the number of melanocytes in the affected area whereas in freckles, there is an increase in pigment WITHOUT any increase in melanocytes.

Hori’s nevus presents as bilateral, symmetrical brown- grey or blue-grey spots localised mainly on the cheekbone areas and less often on the forehead, temples and nose. Genetics and hormones play a role in its development and it is usually found in middle-aged Asian women.

Postinflammatory hyperpigmentation arises after some form of injury or inflammation on the skin. It is considered part of the healing process especially in those of darker skin types. Common causes include acne or some form of skin injury. This condition is usually temporary and resolves with time and sun avoidance.

Common causes of pigmentation include genetics, age, sun exposure and hormonal changes. Injury or inflammatory changes to the skin can also result in an increase or decrease in the pigment content of the skin.

The most important thing is to protect your skin from the sun. Avoid being outside in the mid-day hours, cover up with hats and long sleeve shirts and wear sunscreen daily. Select a sunscreen with adequate UVA and UVB protection, apply the sunscreen evenly and reapply it often if you go swimming or perspire heavily.

Your dermatologist, upon diagnosis of your pigmentation disorder, will advise on the most appropriate treatment. Conditions like melasma and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation usually respond well to topical creams. In addition, there are oral treatments for melasma which have yielded good results. Freckles, lentigos and Hori’s nevus generally respond well to laser or IPL treatments. For maintenance, non-ablative treatments like the Silkpeel or laser toning, coupled with a home care regime of Vit C serum, Vit A or AHA products and sunscreens help to maintain a clear skin tone.

The consultation fee for first visit starts from $90 - $180. The treatment cost will depend to the type of medication or procedure required. Financial counselling will be provided before any procedure is performed.
